Classic car run to boost Centre 81 anniversary

Wednesday 13th June 2012

A classic car run from Cromer to Great Yarmouth is planned this summer as one of the most eye-catching events to mark the 30th birthday celebrations of Centre 81.

It is the brainchild of Howard Wynn, last year appointed chairman of the trustees at Centre 81, a Great Yarmouth charitable group which supports people with physical and other disabilities.

Promotion for the event received an unexpected lift when an RAF rescue helicopter crew landed at Winteron Beach to buy ice creams while Howard and photographer Adrian Buck were there doing publicity shots.

Adrian turned his lens on the helicopter and his photos were later used on television news and by many national and local papers.

Exciting as it was, Howard admitted that word about the classic car event may not have filtered through to all enthusiasts.

"I was encouraged to lead from the front by arranging the event as one of many challenges during our anniversary year to raise funds for the Centre 81 and its facilities. As a classic car enthusiast, it was an easy choice. I was unlikely to run a marathon or swim the channel," said Howard, who has had cerebral palsy from birth.

He's hoping for more than 100 pre-1975 registered vehicles to join the coast run on Sunday July 15 when volunteer collectors will fundraise before and after the spectacular coast run.

His own interest in classic cars goes back around 30 years when he bought and refurbished an MGC but eventually sold it after falling for a 1929 Bullnose Morris. Since then he has also acquired a 1934 Morris Ten-Six Special tourer and is using both cars to further his ambition of enjoying pub lunches at every waterside hostelry in the area.

"The Cromer-Yarmouth run will be something special and we're also looking for a sponsor and some volunteer stewards and helpers for the event."
