Early joy for Rugby Academy students

Monday 7th March 2011

Students at the Rugby Academy of TMS client Easton College are celebrating after becoming cup finalists in the first year of the venture.

The academy was launched last September with a pioneering course which allows students to complete their academic studies while improving rugby skills and furthering their sporting careers.

But the first intake has gone a step further by winning a place in the Norfolk Schools County Cup Final for 16-18 year olds from local colleges and schools.

Now they're hoping to mark the occasion in style by taking at least two busloads of supporters to North Walsham rugby ground on March 16 at 6pm to make the final against Langley School a memorable event.

"We think it is a remarkable achievement in only our first year," said Academy Manager Jonny O’Brien. "There are only 14 lads on the course and we’ve had to call on a few students from other college programmes to be part of the squad.

"Students on the course get five hours a week professional coaching by Nick Greenall, Head Coach for North Walsham Rugby Club, and Simon Roberts, and they’ve come on tremendously.

"Their success is a great boost for the academy and for college sport in general and we hope to increase numbers to 20 or more for the next rugby course from September."

He was delighted to see the academy preparing some of the future stars of the game. Among those already catching the eye are county player Callum Caldwell and Ollie Ware.

To be considered for the course, youngsters have to be club standard players with a passion for rugby and a commitment to their education, having already attained at least four GCSE at A to C grade including English.

The course also gives them access to a new strength and conditioning suite; Dartfish video analysis; psychology and lifestyle mentoring; and an opportunity to gain additional coaching, refereeing and gym instructor qualifications.
