Former powerboat champion turns life saver with SSI

Friday 9th September 2011

Former international power boat racer Steve Kerton has seen his career turn full circle from risking his life in a highly dangerous sport to ensuring the safety of workers who might be in peril at sea.

He has been appointed operational health and safety manager for Norfolk-based Survival Systems international UK Ltd (SSI) which provides and maintains lifeboats principally for the offshore oil and gas sector.

Steve was four-time British champion in formula one powerboat racing in the Eighties and went on to become European champion and twice runner-up in the World Series.  But he also survived some dramatic crashes.

Now, from the company's UK base at Great Yarmouth, his role is to use that personal experience to help SSI maintain its reputation for the highest possible safety standards.

"I think it was meant to be. I love this part of the East Coast, have often holidayed here and fondly remember racing at Oulton Broad in the national championships and for the Battle of Britain Trophy."

Over the years, more than 2,200 people have been safely evacuated from danger by survival capsules manufactured by SSI. It’s a reputation to be proud of and we need to keep improving and to sleep soundly at night knowing that we have done everything to ensure all our products and services offer the maximum safety at sea.

"I'm 58 now and I see this new role as a fresh challenge.  And safety really has been the watchword throughout."
