Lynns career at accountants PKF - 40 years and counting

Wednesday 17th November 2010

PKF may be an international network of accountants with some of the business world's most sophisticated IT, but manager Lynn Bensly still thinks wistfully of the days when her calculations were performed not on a computer but a comptometer.

Lynn, who has just clocked up 40 years service with the TMS client, said: “They were pretty odd-looking adding machines but I loved them, and they were all we had when I started out, other than one’s own ability to add a long list of figures up manually.”

One of the longest serving members of staff at PKF, Lynn is based at the firm's offices at Beacon Park, Gorleston, where her responsibilities include working with the partners to prepare budgets and management accounts for the East Anglian practice.

"It's a great job and I love it," said Lynn. "I really enjoy the challenge of starting a project and seeing it through to the end, and I have always enjoyed working with figures."

She started her career in 1970 as an accounts clerk, working in the Great Yarmouth branch of what was then Tunbridge and Groom. She has witnessed a series of mergers and acquisitions that see her working now for PKF (UK) LLP.

Lynn, who used to play competitive squash and hockey for Gorleston Ladies, continues to lead an active life. She is a member of the Great Yarmouth Soroptimist Club and is a magistrate in both the adult and family courts.

Lynn also has a great love of walking and each year for the last ten years has completed long-distance walks with a group of women from Scotland that she met through Business and Professional Women UK. She has walked the Pennine Way, Hadrian’s Wall and the Great Glen Way, and a recent effort raised more than £600 for the James Paget Hospital’s Palliative Care Appeal. To celebrate her 60th birthday next year she is hoping to walk from coast to coast across northern England.
